Blake Griffin Takes To The Air, But Not The Way You Think

by Micah Hart

Blake Griffin is arguably the most exciting player in the NBA, and here at NBA.com we’ve shown you almost nothing but BG highlights since he first set foot on the floor for the Clippers. But if we are going to poke fun at guys like JaVale McGee and … well mostly JaVale, it feels like we have to show this as well.

I’m going to go on record and say that Blake may have several of the best dunks in NBA history, but this is also probably the worst pair of FTs of all time. See what I mean:

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before in an NBA game. I have a feeling this week’s episode of Shaqtin’ a Fool will hit a little close to home for the Diesel.

  2. Ben says:

Wow…you know he was back on the court after the game practicing some free throws.

  3. Matt says:

I’m just wondering how come professional basketball players are shooting free throws like these. It’s amazing they get paid millions to do that. Still like Blake Griffin though,,,

  4. Jay says:

Blake Griffin, the amazing new Kid no the block…
Basketball is not only dunking and doing show, if u want to win some championship, you have to do more than that !
(Lebron,Griffin, etc) Get some Freethow and Shooting practice ! :)
    :)

  5. Jordan says:

Ben Wallace once also had 2 free throw airballs in a row

  6. dave says:

    Hack-a-Blake?

  7. pudge says:

i think chuck hayes still wins

  8. Danielle says:

How does a Grown Man in the NBA air ball two free throws back to back???? His free throw coach needs to be fired… lol

  9. pasigiri says:

That’s actually incredible. I can’t really make a comment on this and yet I’m compelled to at the same time.

  10. Mirza says:

think this is not horrible…Kobe once air-balled 4 consecutive shots in the playoffs in his 2nd year :-)

    • 3 pointers and free throws are a huge difference.

    • Nuugame says:

Why are you bringing Kobe’s name up?

    • vik says:

those weren’t free throws though, those were like… threes

    • Belizeboy says:

      Exactly!

    • Lebron James says:

are you kidding me man? they were in game shots! now i know that is still poor, but kobe has never airballed a free throw, probably not in his life ever! Blake just airballed two in a row……free throws man!!! they’re called ‘free throws’ for a reason, wide open, relativley close to the basket, no d…… i love kobe! he’s better than me! also i airballed freethrows too, once even in the presesaon a few months ago

      • drt_k says:

well first thing, airballing 4 3pts in a playoff game is much worse than airballing a couple of freethrows. blake shoots ~50% fts, so he prob misses them anyways… 4 turnovers in a row in a playoff game is horrendous, and possibly game breaking!

anyway, the point isnt to bash on kobe, its to say that even great players channel their inner javale mcgee from time to time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoYmXUK1EW4), so take it easy on blake with all the “omg all he does is dunk, hes trash” comments, he does put up 20-10+ every night!

but its still pretty funny how long and deliberate his ft routine is, lol :D

    • tubol says:

Its a freethrow not a jump shot.

  11. Joe Thornton says:

Kevin Love is the best PF in the league and will be for years to come. Blake griffin=Shawn kemp. Predict he has the same kind of career

    • pacersfan says:

blakes technique is sound and he has been working all season on tweeking the finer details. Further to this, kevin love (although i readily admit he is BY FAR the best power forward in the league), has nowhere to go from here, i cant see him radically improving anything in a skilset that is already at its peak. make no mistake, blake griffin is an AVERAGE jumpshot away from being unstoppable.

  12. taylor says:

    lol…I remeber that!

  13. Rueub says:

once this kid gets his freethrows act and better his jump shots than he will be a force to be reckoned with !! most of the times this shamefull scenario works on self improving so hes gotta do his homework parctice and start executing shots cause many times freethrows decide the outcome of the game Good Luck to you man !

  14. awesomeman says:

he should try it rick barry style

  15. Sadee says:

Let him dunk those free throws.

  16. DA says:

i hope this happened because he was workin out and his muscles were sore, other than that no NBA player has an excuse to airball a single freethrow, especially when you’re paid millions to play basketball

  17. Mihmsanity says:

kobes playoff airballs were FG attempts not free throws…there is a big difference. Besides there is no denying that kobe has proven a lot since then

  18. Sweet says:

Oh really? Where can I find the stats on that? I’d like to learn what was going on in Kobe’s world for that to happen to him.

As far as Blake is concerned though, his greatness has never been at the foul line–his talents are so sharp doing other things, that’s why his notariety is so high so missing free throws like this is forgiven.

  19. celticsfan9 says:

blake has NO depth besides dunking..he’s HORRIBLE and he has no low post game despite the fact he’s a power forward. yes he is a good dunker but dunks dont get you rings, dunks get you tv time and that all the clippers will ever get is air time

    • chris says:

ok 1 hes a 2nd year player.. cut him some slack cozthere is no player thats been in the league 2 years thats beter then him.. (id listen to an argument for demarcus cousins)..
2.. the man averages 20 points a game on dunks alone? c’mon son.. smarten up please.. he dunks alot but the man is good under the basket

      • celticsfan9 says:

smarten up? you must be a clipper fan, your first point was ignorant..who cares if he’s a second year player? to be getting millions he should atleast hit rim, if this what basketball consists of then most of america would be in the nba. second, like i said DUNKS dont get you championships. like mostly all of the guys on nba tv said they will never build a team around blake griffin

  20. Ryan says:

oh that’s nothing! shooting is not his thing and he’s 50% at best from the line. i once saw ben wallace miss 10 free throws straight with 1 being an air ball to the left and another going over the backboard. now that was awful! actually it was downright painful to see 10 straight misses from a professional.

  21. Fleo Black says:

Kobe Bryant puts up at least one air ball in every game. So does Derrick Rose. Watch the games, keep track.

  22. ^Celticssuck says:

First of all Blake Griffin obviously is not HORRIBLE. Easily the second best PF in the league. And you’r right Dunks don’t win championships… but defense does and Blake Griffin is pretty solid at D as well. Yeah this was pathetic, there’s no denying that but he’s still a machine

    • Dan says:

      2nd best? seriously?

Lebron, Gasol, Bosh, Nowitzki, (Both Bosh and Nowitzki play C but should be at PF)

    • celticsfan9 says:

blakes defense is not “solid” its ok, of course it looks great if hes guarding people 40 pounds lighter. he sucks besides dunking and there is no substance in his game. the clippers will NEVER win a championship with the entertainers they have on their roster.

  23. NBAfan says:

its an airball so what? everyone has airball a shot before.
if you havent shot an airball in your life you havent played basketball enough it happens even to the best players.
so stop hating on BLAKE and KOBE!
you people wish you could do half the things they be doing in theyr lives.

  24. Casual Observer says:

The release should be right after you straighten your knees – Blake has pretty much the same free throw shooting form as all the other horrible free throw shooting big men, e.g. Shaq. Bending your knees and coming to a full stop before you release the ball means your shooting arm won’t be able to extend naturally. But he’ll improve, no worries. Blake is not Shawn Kemp. He’s a Karl Malone who can jump like Shawn Kemp.

  25. King BAH says:

wow he really missed does frees man that sucks

  26. Tom says:

    Ben Wallace!

  27. anel says:

I find it weird aswell. I agree they have superb talent and deserve (relatively) the money they get.. but seriously? How can you be that bad? Kids at 12 years of age can throw to the hoop… Most players playing for a couple of years can make at least 40-60% free throws.. I’m just boggled how such a player can exist, to dominate one part of the court, and fail on the other.

  28. cash says:

Arguably the best power forward of all time, Tim Duncan has had some bad times at the line but never an airball! Timmy could dunk in his younger years but it’s his fundamentals that keep him sharp and still soo good today. Let’s see where blake is in 10 years or so when he can’t jump so high. Kevin Love is much better than Blake, take your highlights to Harlem and become a globetrotter blake!

  29. ko0kiE says:

he should do jumpshots at the FT line.. seems like he has a better percentage when jumping..I thought especially yesterday his jump shots looked pretty good.. much better than his ugly FT form..

  30. youtillyt says:

I dont believe it. Cant understand it. Hate it. ugh.

  31. Alex says:

he’s a terrible player besides dunk, so overrated. Kevin Love would end him
