Paul George Isn’t Out Of Dunk Contest Yet

VIDEO: George’s 360 Dunk

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Indiana’s Paul George has become one of the best all-around players in the NBA, but it wasn’t long ago that he was known for his dunking — he finished second in the 2012 Slam Dunk Contest. And of course, just a few days ago he threw down one of the best dunks of the season (see the video above).

So it was a bit disappointing late last week when it was reported that George would be skipping this year’s Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.

But not so fast my friends! As George clarified yesterday to Pacers.com, he may still throw down after all…

The chances of him competing are slim, as he would prefer to rest and enjoy the weekend in The Big Easy. He is still open to the idea of taking part in at least one event and plans to decide in the next few days.

When asked whether he had declined the offers, George said, “No, I haven’t declined. I’m keeping my options open.”

In particular with the dunk contest, George, who fans would love to see be involved after he showed off a 360-degree slam in Saturday’s win, would like to see it taken more seriously.

“It would all depend on who’s in it,” he stated. “I want to be in it when the competition is good.”

the Dunk contest along with the 3 point contest have turned into a joke i mean no offense to the guys who have been in it for the last 10 years or so but for the most part you dont see any names that are a veiwer draw…. i do like to see new talent out there but guys like Lebron(who yes folks hate on it is currently the best player and if he continues at this rate will be the best ever and no Jordan isnt the best ever Bill Russell is sorry and no im not a celtics fan im an Orlando fan) but like i was saying lebron, dwight, blake, george, derozan, jordan, just to name a few seem to not be about the fans like the older NBA… allstar weekend was about showing the fans your appreciation for being a fan the last great dunk in a slam dunk contest was by none other then Vince Carter… i mean Griffins car dunk was lame ive seen people do it over the roof of a car i mean this dude jumps over a hood and the croud roared…. JR smith has had better dunks in games then griffin had in the dunk contest…. and lebron put his dress on when he claimed on TV he was going to be in the dunk contest after dwight howards 12′ dunk and guess what no show!

  5. RapsATW says:

Lebron wont do it but it would be nice… and what about the reigning champ T Ross.

  6. Tim says:

PG vs Lebron in slam dunk contest.

It should be for the west blake griffin russel westbrook and gerald green and then for the east it should be terrence ross lebron james and paul george

  9. Shep says:

The good players in the league need to come together and push each other to compete against one another. To create a all star weekend dunk contest they need to have actual all stars in it. Give me Lebron, George, KD, Deandre Jordan and a healthy Westbrook (or whoever you favor) and im sure they could come up with something out of the norm while trying to outshine each other. It would be very entertaining but people are to worried about their image.. Today you just get the same old standard video game dunks every year on repeat with a occasional twist to it. Back in the day everyone would compete we need that Jordan vs Wilkins energy back but that wont happen without the stars. Griffin entered but his in game poster dunks trump anything he attempted in the actual contest. And yea jumping over the kia was lame like mike said…All stars have the ability to do great things others cant which the crowd would love to see. Just don’t call it a all star weekend dunk contest if we are watching mediocre players compete. No offense to the leapfrogs a la Gerald Green, etc… they are exceptional leapers and deserve to be there but without the stars it will just be another re-run from previous years.

    • Shep says:

With that said, I will still be watching and praying for someone to leap in the air and throw down a miracle…

  10. jjj says:

George already lost the slam dunk contest 2012, came in 3rd place which Jeremy Evans won. Budinger came in 2nd. WTF

    • Russell Eastbrook says:

Yeah, people forgot PG in 2012 had awful dunks. Windmill dunks are so mehhhhh.

I would like to see Terrence Williams, LBJ, Derozan, DeAndre Jordan, Terrence Ross and Westbrook.

  11. Roger says:

You know who is a totally underrated dunker that I’d love to see? Reggie Jackson on OKC. Paul George, Reggie Jackson, reigning champ T-Ross, a couple hyped rookies like Oladipo and McLemore? That’d be pretty sick

  12. DJC291973 says:

  16. Dirkasaurus says:

PG had the best dunk last year hands down, I don;t think he has anything to prove. PG and the Blue & Gold are on the correct mission; securing the best record so that everybody plays thru INDY.

  17. darren says:

Sonny Weems needs an at-large invite… in addition to being offered a contract to re-join the Raptors. He and Terrance Ross can battle it out before the franchise Rebrand.

  18. anthony says:

please George save the dunk contest, perfect homage to carter with that 360 windmill, I would really love to see vince make a return against the new talent, I do believe even in his twilight years he has some hops and can still put on a show…. come back vince…..

    contestants:
    paul George
    vince carter
    demar derozen
    Terrence ross
    blake griffin
    lbj or kd

  19. retalianis says:

they could change the all-star game stakes to make it more exciting for everyone:
west vs east, the winner of the all competition gets one win in the regular season
it means that if the west wins at the end of the week-end, all the west teams are given one win which means it could give the number one seed in the west homecourt advantage on the number one seed in the east.
that way, everyone will be competing his best (especially players from the top teams) so they can maybe win homecourt advantage thanks to this.

  20. KJ11 says:

East: George, LeBron, Ross (DeRozan, Oladipo, Wall)
West: Gerald Green, Griffin, KD (DeAndre Jordan, Reggie Jackson)
Also id like to see Shannon Brown agian, i know he sucked in 2010, but he can really jump, he just needs someone to tell him what to do.

  21. Jean_Phi says:

That would be great to see a dunk contest with Paul George, Lebron, Blake Griffin and a couple other guys who would give their best like Jimmy Butler or Eric Bledsoe.

I don’t think the NBA is playing it very good to make them participate. They should dare them to do it. If one or two stars do it, the others vill follow.

  22. TS says:

Sure you’d like to see the best dunkers go at each other in a contest however the decrease in the contest’s popularity is actually the game itself and not the players joining. I think Payton said it best … nowadays seeing a dunk is as frequent as seeing a 3 pointer (yap … defense, refereeing, etc.) thus the excitement for a dunk contest reduced. Throwing LBJ, PG, BG, Green … in the contest would definitely help increasing the popularity, however you should always find the cause in order to find a cure :)

  23. Joep Cressent says:

    BEN MCLEMOREEEE Flight 16 !!!

  24. Travis says:

I swear that announcer dude says “oh yeah BG!!”. It’s PG, get it right

    • Ryan says:

That’s Quinn Buckner… Long time Pacer and Pacer announcer, good friends with Clark Kellogg (former Pacer announcer before making it national). Quinn has studied the Pacers since PG was born. With all that said…… He didn’t say BG lol

  25. LIKEMIKE says:

Someone please get Gerald Green in the Dunk Contest!!! He needs to be there

  26. AXWELL311 says:

C’mon LBJ…man up & take on PG in the dunk contest
