Roy Hibbert Sticks Up for Anthony Bennett

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — The Cleveland Cavaliers used the first overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft to select Anthony Bennett out of UNLV. This was considered something of a surprise — even though there was no real consensus number one overall prospect, Bennett was not being projected by many experts as the top pick.

It was thought that the Cavs drafted Bennett hoping for an immediate contributions, yet as of today he was averaging just 2.8 points per game, to go along with 2.5 rebounds per game. So last week when Bennett had a 15-point, 8-rebound game against the New Orleans Pelicans, many wondered if Bennett was finally breaking out and showing why the Cavs drafted him first overall. Was this just an aberration? Was Bennett just having one good game? (In the two games after his big night, he scored a combined 6 points.)

Someone out there took to Photoshop to poke fun at Bennett’s big game by crossing it with the iconic image of Wilt Chamberlain after he scored 100. And that’s when Pacers big man Roy Hibbert got involved. Hibbert himself had something of a slow rise to prominence in the NBA, averaging 7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as a rookie, but through hard work and dedication has been able to turn himself into an All-Star center and dominant defender.

And as Hibbert explained, it’s still way too early to judge Bennett…

in this day and age ppl want instant success…not sure why if your top 3 pick and u dont average 18-20 ppg or double digit boards ppl start labeling you as a bust

  2. Mark says:

That was really great of Hibbert, especially considering that people thought he was going to be a bust. I’m hoping Bennett improves.

Way too early to judge? Maybe a little too early. Seriously, was good to see that 15 pt/8 reb performance though.

Cleveland is a mess by the way.

Bennett has got skills to perform on a decent level. But he’s still young mentally. If he was selected by a more stable organisation he would be scoring 10 points per game in this stage of his career. He deserves a more disciplined team. The Cavs is nt the right organisation to become NBA-wise right now.

Look at Terrance Jones! He is having a great sophomore campaign.

  7. Shin says:

Send him to The raptors. CLeveland isn’t right for him. He needs to play in his home to feel comfortable. Anyways cleveland is so garbage with so much talent. The team is a mess. No team play. The Gm fails hard. Whoever wants to play for cleveland is bound to lose. That why lebron wil never return

  8. Phil says:

1st overall on any other team he would have developed faster. I hate to say this to the people of Cleveland because it is rather offensive but the fact of the matter is it is a cancerous sports city

Yeah hibbert, good call,, Terrence jones?? Even Terrance Ross?? Reggie Jackson? So much can change in your second year… Plus cleveland is falling apart if the players can’t help themselves how can they help a raw rook!!!!

  11. Shawn Kemp no. 1 says:

he has to get out of Cleveland if he’s going to develop

Great from Hibbert. I hope that Bennett will improve, and be patient. It takes time. Good luck to him.

A lot of ppl thought of the same about Hibbert (being a bust) but he was patient.
In all honestly, I was maybe one of the very few who thought he could be a dominant center in the game (but ppl laughed at me). Now he is a 2-time all star & running for DPOY honors.

Let’s be patient with Anthony Bennett! Keep your head up kid!

  13. aqw says:

he got no confidence, I would send him down to the D league, let him have a couple of good games, get him into a rythm and then call him back up to the league, and cleveland is a bad team, with a bad playmaking point guard, kid is in a though spot right now.

    • NYK says:

@aqw you are an idiot.A bad playmaking pg? Kyrie is an elite playmaker and you are an idiot for thinking otherwise.

You still can’t deny the fact that he isn’t playing to the expectations that he’s supposed to meet as the #1 overall draft pick. Considering there are at least a dozen rookies playing better than he is. You can’t say that he’s a bust yet, but he should be playing way better than he has been.

  15. St. Lou says:

Too early to judge, but definitely time to have doubts.

  16. Sharpie says:

Lance Stephenson averaged 3 points in his rookie year and 2 in his sophomore year. Now in his fourth he’s leading the league in triple doubles and averaging 14 points a game. Have a bit of patience.

  17. danielmlane says:

Bennett can develope into a 10 pts 6-8 rebounds a game type of player. At best! And now the franchise player is unhappy expect locker room division and destruction!
