New Orleans Pelicans Continue Interesting Mascot Choices

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — In this the first season of the New Orleans Pelicans, the franchise has had some very public mascot difficulties. After introducing a pelican named Pierre a few months back, a remixed, more friendly Pelican was introduced just before the All-Star break.

And then last night the Pelicans trotted out something called King Cake Baby, which is, frankly, rather disturbing.

The King Cake, for what it’s worth, is a Mardi Gras tradition, in which a small plastic toy baby is cooked inside a cake. If you get the baby in your slice of cake, it traditionally signals good luck.

If a huge version of King Cake Baby shows up on the basketball court, however, I’m not so sure it signals luck of any kind.

So I'm for sure going to have nightmares about King Cake Baby.

Is very disturbing……maybe New Orleans could have a ……….. “Pelican” for their mascot. Just a thought!

Shame they could’nt call their Pelican (with the nose job) Jazz, but maybe they could go with Funk and give him a trumpet. Really think that when teams move to another location ie: Utah (Jazz) they should pick up a new nickname that more suits their new location. Apart from Utah, LA springs to mind because they aren’t really close to teh great lakes are they. But who is going to tell them to change…….No one!! Mind you it’s not as bad as Utah, you can probably find a lake somewhere in LA. Someone said there was a Grzzly Bear in Memphis, apparently it was in a zoo.

The lakers used to be the minneapolis lakers. If you know geography, then you know that Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes.

  2. Stupid just plain stupid!

  3. NBAsucksnow says:

how are you gonna have a fat white baby rep NOLA

just make it a pelican or a big eyebrow or something that represents NOLA as a whole… you know…?

look at the miami logo and mascot, the mascot is essentially the logo but with eyes. their stuff signifies basketball as a whole (along with miami itself) and fits well… this does not

    • That guy says:

Best name i could think of is probably “Needs deo“ because think of it cajun is redneck and french what deodorant can handle that?

  4. laughing with kiwi land says:

the guy that made this is using the same drugs as the guy who made the first pelican mascotte

  5. JJ says:

it this a joke or a horror movie

  6. None Of The Above says:

Nah just stick with the newer pelican mascot. That baby is just weird.

  7. dustydreamnz says:

The baby is cool but doesn’t look much like a pelican.

  8. Making it Rain 3's says:

Okay then… that’s gonna haunt me in my sleep! Why not a Pelican? They are called the New Orleans PELICANS!

    • Joe Pluto says:

They have a pelican, dummies, and it’s pretty cool now. This is just a mardi gras thing. It’s very much tied into New Orleans culture.

  9. King Baby Cake says:

‘Pelicans’ is a dumb name. They should change the name of the team to the New Orleans ‘Voodoo Priests’ and have their mascot be the scary voodoo priest from the Indiana Jones movie the one that sucked. Or they should change the name of the team to the New Orleans ‘King Baby Cakes’ if they are going to use that mascot. Other good names are ‘Gators’, ‘Floods’, ‘Hurricanes’, ‘Bayou’, ‘Soul’, ‘Hocus Pocus’, ‘Blues’, ‘Trumpets’, ‘Mosquitoes’, ‘Horns’, ‘Creoles’, ‘Parades’, plenty of names better than ‘Pelicans.’ Oh yeah and probably the best name ‘Jazz’ but that one is taken already …

  10. Stradio says:

No one here commenting realizes this isn’t the Pelican’s mascot. It’s just a thing they do down there, having some fun and getting weird with it. Part of getting weird is not caring what anyone else thinks about it. :)

What’s next, the blood soaked twins from “The Shining”?

  12. New Orleans 'Spirits' says:

New Orleans ‘Spirits’ is the best name. ‘Spiritis’ has multiple meanings. As in the ghosts that haunt Victorian mansions. Or the ‘spirits’ from voodoo ritual magic. Or the ‘spirits’ imbibed during Mardi Gras. The mascot could be the villain from the Scream movies.

Other names I came up with are: Carnivals, Jesters, Cajuns, Vampires, Bats but none of these are as good as ‘Spirits.’

  13. Woooow says:

This has always been here….this is used when they have these little uni-cycle races at half time. It’s between a king, this baby, and something else that I can’t remember. This isn’t the real mascot…why is it JUST suddenly a big thing? XD

  14. Mo says:

It’s obvious you guys are just now seeing this thing. Whitaker are you telling me you’re JUST NOW seeing the King Cake Baby? The team brings it out every year during Mardi Gras time. I don’t know why it’s all of a sudden making headlines now.

  15. High Speed Kurt says:

This has been around for almost 5 years. It’s used during Mardi Gras, when we eat king cake. It’s just for a race during a timeout, they have a jester and a king as well.

Running joke was the baby never won, last year it finally did. I thought that was the end of these but I was wrong.
