Jermaine O’Neal has mastered the free throw pump fake

By Lang Whitaker, NBA.com

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — The free throw is supposed to be one of the easiest shots in basketball. You go to the line, completely unguarded, and have ten seconds to shoot the ball from fifteen feet. Simple enough, although all kinds of people have had all kinds of trouble with the shot. Sometimes even the people whoa who aren’t even shooting it.

Coaches often teach players to find their own routine at the free throw line and to stick to that, over and over and over again until it becomes second nature. Unfortunately, Jermaine O’Neal‘s free throw routine appears to involve holding the ball at the top of his shooting motion for just a moment. And if you watch this video below, you’ll see nobody — opponents or teammates — can quite figure out when to start going for the rebound…

mastering the free throw pump fake will not gives you another ring. You need to join again Miami to get a ring with our “king” LeBron”

      • King Durant says:

Unfortunately for Lebrick, this year it won’t happen. I doubt Miami will even get past Indy on the ECF and even they do the new King Kevin Durant and the OKC will crush them. FACT!

      • Sharpie says:

LMAO. Lebron and Durant are going home without a ring this year. Miami won’t beat Indiana. Heck I’d be shocked if they could even beat Chicago, Toronto or Brooklyn. OKC won’t beat the Spurs or Rockets. I’d actually be surprised if OKC even makes it out of the first round. OKC fans better hope the Thunder get matched up with the Suns in the first round because I don’t see them beating Dallas or Memphis.

      • YeahRight says:

Are you sure you’re in your right mind? Will Crush them? OKC will never get past Spurs this year also, FACT! 2nd, Remeber how Miami Crushed OKC Last two years? WITH JAMES HARDEN on YOUR TEAM?! FACT!

    • bless says:

      This idiot again [lbj]!

      • NBAFAN says:

Haha @Sharpie almost everything you said was entirely untrue OKC has as good if not a better chance to win the West and the championship, the mavs and grizzlies however will not win it Dallas has no chance and the Suns are better than they are. The east is going to consist of either the heat or the pacers your “heat wont get past Toronto” comment proved how uneducated you are. Chicago is the only team in the east that has a chance to beat Indiana or Miami and its not a good one. If the heat don’t make it to the championship the west will win no matter what.

It’s actually clever. If he misses he gets to shoot again

  3. Jeffx21 says:

Actually Laughed Out Loud on this one and I was alone. Very Funny…….perfect song choice.

      2. Watched the Matrix Shot Training
      3. Then came here for the ultimate laughing reel.
Haven’t laughed that much for some time when on nba.com.
      Thanks

  4. Kingston says:

    Chuck Hayes?

  5. Yay says:

It’s great – he catches the other players put every single time. Perfect execution.

  6. Fan says:

He should be fined every time he puts up an ugly shot like this.
Even after how many years in the NBA, O’Neal is unable to develop a proper shot… must be the name :)

  7. F.B. says:

    What’s with the song. LoL!

  8. GoGSW says:

It’s a good trick! It fools people and helps Oneal shoot free throws very well!#gowarriors

    • Sharpie says:

Yes because fooling your teammate is a great strategy. I bet you won’t think it’s a good trick when the refs wise up and his free throw gets waved off because it took him more than 10 seconds to shoot the ball.

  9. Nicholas Smith says:

We’ve been teasing his weird and counter productive free throw shot since he was here in Indy, but this song just makes it haha

  10. vincent says:

okay..this is just nitpicking, but i was raised this way because teachers always nitpick in school, but you have have a short block of text and you can’t edit ” whoa aren’t even shooting it.”?

    • Lang Whitaker says:

Nice catch. Made it thru spellcheck because “whoa” is a word, I guess. I fixed it. Thanks for reading!

  11. cory says:

I never, ever, want my eyeballs to see this ever again.

  12. gamezone101 says:

put this in shaq’tin a fool not for jermaine o’neal but for the rebounder..hahha

  13. jieRo says:

it’s funny how even his teammates fall for the pump fake.

  14. Nicholas says:

Hahaha.. Even the ref fell for it (see 0:18). Whimsical !!

  15. Sharpie says:

Those free throws are a LOT longer than 10 seconds. It sure would be nice if the refs actually followed the rules.

    • Sam says:

You should learn to count. The majority of them are slightly less than 10 seconds. 10 seconds is actually quite a bit of time. Oh and since you can’t count, just like at the time (on the YouTube clip) when he gets the ball till he shoots.

    • Scmoney says:

But you dont care the refs never call the defensive player for going in the lane 5 seconds to early?

  16. abchome says:

LOL Dragic was so mad getting pump faked :D

  17. Johnny Kilroy says:

Yeah right, in utopia refs will start 2 call lane violations when they start calling travelling, but in the real world… Trained 2 turn a blind eye 2 maximize revenue through highlights. “I love this game” but seriously sends mixed signals 2 future generations. I love the highlights as much as the next guy but preferably within the rules of this amazing game.

  18. Not sure if clever or terrible… Either way, this video is fantasticcc, hahah..

  19. jty7271 says:

    Good song choice.

  20. OldCelt says:

Funniest thing … he pump fakes his teammates just the same. I’d expect them to get used to it by now, but nope …

  21. Fred says:

The Beatles should sue… like they always do

  22. will says:

if he misses, he gets another shot due to lane violation of opponents, or even jumpball when teammates and opponent go for the rebound together.

  23. will says:

other players i know with this shot are bill cartwright, pat ewing, anthony mason, kevin mchale (sometimes)…. it’s a good style, especially if it is going in consistently.

  24. LookAtHisTeammates says:

It is soooo funny watching how his teammates help him faking lol

  25. A Tillman says:

Do they call lane violations on those?

  26. Zac says:

    SOOO Funny!

    I want this one on NBA2k15 !!!!

  27. philanopolis says:

this is hilarious if he miss and the defense is in the paint he gets another shot, but does the league thinks this is legal?

  28. The J Hutch says:

this has got nothing to do with Lebron James or Kevin Durant. shut up about your “favourite players” and just appreciate the journalism/funny videos for stories not involving your biased opinions about who’s going to win the championship. It’s still regular season! fools

  29. AC says:

What’s the point of bending the knees for him….

  30. rkamphaus says:

This is hilarious! I remember when he played the Pacers earlier in the year and West got a lane violation on it. I was thinking how are they supposed to know when to go and that it was a pretty good idea.

  31. rkamphaus says:

This is hilarious! I remember when he was playing the Pacers earlier in the year and West got a lane violation. Was thinking how is anybody supposed to know when to go on his shots. But good idea if its legal.

  32. Rhedz says:

Its a strategy of jermaine and i have observe that his team mates knew about the delay his doing to get the other team off rythm or confuse. But jermaine is a decent F.T shooter so s fine. Its cool that someone is doing something original from that spot.

  33. GoGSW says:

    Well,Sharpie,it doesn’t take him 10 seconds,it takes him only 3 seconds!

  34. Chris says:

I hate miami band wagon jumping trolls….LeBron is great but i bet 2\3 of you birds werent even heat fans before he took his talents to south beach. Go Raptors.

  35. JM says:

    nice video….

  36. ikey says:

LOL!!! This is really entertaining. GJ O’Neal!

  37. Giancarlo says:

haha!!! this video makes me laugh again and agaim

  38. jake s. says:

This is very creepy, but i was listening to Yellow Submarine like 20 minutes ago. I had to check YouTube to see if it was still playing. I’m scared.

  39. Jose says:

Very funny , love the beattles song and everything, but, my question is, are the referees calling zone violation any time an opponent steps on the restricted zone before he lets the ball out of his hands, or canceling the shot if he makes it and one of his team mates does the same?

  40. Noitidart says:

    HAHAHAHAH this is soooo funnnnnny!
