VIDEO: Robinson scores 71 points

Welcome to Throwback Thursday here on the All Ball Blog. Each week, we’ll delve into the NBA’s photo archives and uncover a topic and some great images from way back when. Hit us up here if you have suggestions for a future TBT on All Ball. Suggestions are always welcome!

Today’s Topic: David Robinson scores 71 points

On April 24, 1994, the final day of the 1993-94 regular season, David Robinson trailed Shaquille O’Neal by just 33 points for the NBA scoring title. Robinson made sure the title was his by erupting for 71 points on 26-for-41 from the field against the Los Angeles Clippers. At season’s end, he edged Shaq for the title by .5 points per game.

Only four other NBA players (Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, David Thompson and Kobe Bryant) have scored more than 70 points and Robinson is the only one to accomplish the feat while shooting over 63 percent from the floor. Robinson continued to shine during the 1994-95 regular season to win the MVP.

  1. lbj says:

Doing 71 pts in a game won’t give The Admiral his 3rd ring. He needs to play with Miami now so both him and our “king” LeBron will get their 3rd ring by June!!!

  2. Andy4fun says:

Tim Duncan, the man formerly known as David Robinson….

  3. None Of The Above says:

Excellent player David Robinson but just like Hakeem (who was even better) he often gets overlooked in favor of the hyped up names from the big market teams.

  4. Don Frank says:

Dont know if I have a key moment. But one year later I bought my first issue of a basketball fanzine.

Yeah you got it: The Admiral was right on the cover page! Great player. One of my all time favs!!

  5. CAine says:

I wonder who was garding him at that game?
    Totally owned.

What is sacary is Hakeem owned David Robinson. If Hakeem played against Clippers that night, he would have scored like 90 pts or something.

    • kd says:

Your logic is flawed, Hakeem would not have scored close to 70. He had no motivation to do so

    • Harris says:

Excluding this 71 point game, both Hakeem and Robinson only scored 50 or more points TWICE in their entire career. Chasing the scoring title was the only reason Robinson scored that much points. No way Hakeem scores 90 points.

  6. Roger says:

Best Center ever in my opinion. He was more talented than any other center in NBA history, just got over look since he played in San Antonio. Defensively he was awesome and his offense was like no other center in the game. He could drive like a guard and shoot like a small forward.
