The Spurs’ Coyote catches a bat

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — The AT&T Center in San Antonio is a good place to watch a great basketball team, as it’s the home of the San Antonio Spurs. It is also, apparently, a pretty good place to see wild animals. You may recall a few years ago, when a bat flew too close to the action and was swatted from the sky by Manu Ginobili, a maneuver that eventually resulted in Ginobili receiving a rabies shot.

Then there was the playoff game in San Antonio two years ago, when the Portland Trail Blazers entered their locker room to find a large snake in Thomas Robinson‘s locker.

So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that last night in San Antonio, before the Spurs hosted the Timberwolves, another bat got loose in the arena. This time, however, instead of relying on their All-Star shooting guard to corral the bat, the Spurs mascot, Coyote, took to the floor dressed as Batman, of course, and caught the winged beast in under 90 seconds…

The new San Antonio Spurs HEB commercials are here

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — It’s a tradition unlike any other: With the start of a new NBA season comes the release of several new commercials for HEB, the San Antonio-based grocery chain, starring various members of the San Antonio Spurs. This newest batch of commercials doesn’t disappoint, as new Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge joins Spurs stalwarts Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Patty Mills and mascot The Coyote.

NBA mascots are running wild

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Let’s agree on this: Someone needs to do something. Because NBA mascots seem like they’re starting to get a little full of themselves. They’re running wild, their behavior unchecked, and we don’t know where they will strike next. Well, actually, we have a pretty good idea where they may turn up next — messing with an NBA announcer. Here are two examples from the past week, where the San Antonio Coyote popped up behind Spurs radio broadcaster Bill Schoening, and then in Chicago, Benny the Bull does something similar to Hawks announcers Bob Rathbun and Dominique Wilkins. So NBA broadcasters, watch your backs. The mascots are coming for us all!

Spurs, mascot take in Germany’s sights

By Jeff Case

By design, the NBA preseason puts just about every team in a variety of environments other than their home stadium. From a jaunt to nearby-ish locales (such as the Toronto Raptors heading to Vancouver yesterday to take on the Sacramento Kings) to the NBA’s Global Games (the full schedule is here), the preseason is an opportunity for non-NBA cities to get a look at the world’s best basketball players.

The defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are part of the 2014 Global Games slate and have two games overseas this week: Oct. 8 vs. Alba Berlin in Berlin, Germany and Oct. 11 vs. Fenerbahçe Ülker Istanbul in Istanbul, Turkey. The team left for Germany last Friday and has been there since, practicing and such as it readies for the Wednesday night game.

But when they’re not practicing, some of the Spurs (and the team’s mascot, Coyote) took in the sights in Berlin. First, here’s the mascot …

And here’s Tiago Splitter and Patty Mills chatting up and visiting with the locals …

San Antonio Coyote named mascot of the year

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Here at the All Ball blog, we love keeping an interested eye trained on NBA mascots, who spend night after night providing entertainment for NBA fans in arenas across North America. It’s a mostly thankless job, one done under the cover of faux fur, where your true identity is sublimated in order to become a character.

But occasionally a mascot is singled out, as happened yesterday when The Coyote, the mascot for the San Antonio Spurs, was voted NBA mascot of the year by his fellow mascots. The Coyote — a wild-eyed, pants-less canine — joins his franchise atop their respective divisions.

To honor The Coyote, here are some of his highlights from the 2013-14 season…

Best of times, worst of times for mascots

By Lang Whitaker, NBA.com

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Last week we noted the reported retirement of Bango the Buck as well as the return of The Raptor in Toronto. This week we check back in to find a mascot missing his eyes, as well as a mascot with a penchant for making amazing shots…

Let’s start in Denver, where Nuggets mascot Rocky shows off his ability to make all sorts of incredible trick shots…

Meanwhile, down in San Antonio, Spurs mascot Coyote bounced off of Denver’s Aaron Brooks, and the collision caused his eyes to pop out. Which has to be a bummer.
