Beard-Off: FIBA Edition

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — We noted earlier that Team USA had little trouble with Serbia in the final of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, winning 129-92. Team USA was excited, breaking into dance moves and making snow angels on the floor.

Serbia may have lost, but the players weren’t completely defeated. Just check out this quote from Serbia center Miroslav Raduljica

Now, if you’re not familiar with Mr. Raduljica, you should get familiar. As part of looking alarmingly like The Starters co-host Trey Kerby, Raduljica has a thick, cultivated beard, as you can see below…

Serbia v France

Now, this isn’t to say James Harden, who has made commercials about his beard, doesn’t have something significant happening on his own…

2014 World Cup Finals - Serbia v USA

But what we are here to uncover is, Who wore it better? And for that, we could only turn to you, All Ball readers, and ask for your input.

So tell us, who had the better FIBA beard? Cast your vote below…

Team USA busts a move after winning gold

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Team USA won gold in the final of yesterday’s FIBA Basketball World Cup with a decisive win over Serbia, 129-92. But before returning home, Team USA had to collect their medals and their trophies. And then, right there on the podium, they all broke into the “shmoney dance”…

Well, everyone except Derrick Rose, who kind of just stood around on the right side there…

Also, Klay Thompson made a snow angel in the confetti…

Stephen Curry never misses

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — While most people thought Team USA would struggle in the FIBA Basketball World Cup without players like Kevin Love, Kevin Durant and Paul George, Team USA managed to mostly sail through the competition behind strong performances from the players on the perimeter, from James Harden to Kyrie Irving to Klay Thompson.

And then there was Stephen Curry. We already knew he was one of the best shooters in the NBA, and Curry cemented that status in Spain, shooting 44 percent on threes. Check out this video below from the NBA’s Youtube channel, in which we see one of Curry’s off-day workouts in Madrid. There’s a reason why he never seems to miss…

Steph Curry wins shooting contest from bench

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — One of the reasons USA Basketball has people around with cameras filming everything is just in case a situation like the one below breaks out. At a Team USA practice in Barcelona, an impromptu shooting contest happened between Kenneth Faried, Stephen Curry and James Harden. That in and of itself isn’t all that rare. But in this case, their shooting station was the bench.

James Harden falling off a Segway in Barcelona

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Team USA is in Barcelona now with a couple of days off before the knock-out rounds of the FIBA Basketball World Cup start tomorrow. And with some free time in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, James Harden decided to take a Segway on an excursion around the town. And apparently a Segway is tougher to ride than one might suspect…

James Harden watches New Zealand do the Haka

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Today in Spain at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, Team USA faced off against New Zealand. Like they do before many international sports matches, the New Zealand players first performed a traditional dance called the Haka. According to Wikipedia, the Haka is “a traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment.”

Here’s an animated GIF of the New Zealand team performing the Haka, with James Harden looking on…

Klay Thompson is really dedicated to his fantasy football draft

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — Last night a friend invited me to go with him to the Braves/Mets game at Citi Field. I’m a Braves fan, but because I live in New York, I don’t all that many chances to see them play in person. Normally, I would have jumped at the chance…but I hesitated because I remembered last night was also the night of my fantasy football draft. And as anyone who has ever played any fantasy sport — basketball, football, baseball, doesn’t matter — there really isn’t much worse than letting the computer auto-draft your team and winding up with a bunch of players you don’t want, or a bunch of guys who play the same position.

Lucky for me, I was wrong about my draft date — it is tonight — so I was able to get out and enjoy a baseball game on a nice evening. But being present for your fantasy draft sometimes takes extreme measures.

Take, for instance, Golden State guard Klay Thompson, who is currently in Bilbao, Spain, prepping for the FIBA Basketball World Cup as a member of Team USA. Despite being half a world and about a dozen time zones from home, Thompson woke up at 5:30 AM in order to take part in his fantasy football draft. As he wrote in the caption, he doesn’t trust the auto draft. Smart man.
