As if this game needed any more fuel…

KG’s special sneaks for today’s Celtics-Lakers game (via Counter Kicks)

On Friday night, Kevin Garnett dropped Channing Frye with a tap that every man fears. After the subsequent reaction (including Frye dropping like he was hit with a one-two combo from Manny Pacquiao then rising like he was the Ultimate Warrior) and ejections, many wondered if Garnett would be suspended for today’s marquee matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Wonder no more. We know The Big Ticket will be in action today at 3:30 p.m. on ABC, with a scowl and custom-made “Beat L.A.” shoes.

Never mind that the game is in L.A. Or that Boston’s star opponent is known for taking slights like this personal. Or that this is their first time in the Staples Center since Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals. Or that said star opponent tried the green shoe thing Christmas Day with inauspicious results.

Forget all that. It just seems to me that it’s beneath KG to blatantly taunt an opponent.

Nothing short of a hospitalized family member or compadre will keep me away from this square-off.

Last night in … uh oh

by Micah Hart

The Celtics have been arguably the NBA’s best team through the season’s first two months, and they are most certainly title contenders. But of the teams vying for the title, I’d say they are the ones carrying the biggest if. As in, the Celtics can win the title, IF they can stay healthy. I realize you can say that about every team*, but Boston is the team with the oldest collection of talent (amongst their most important contributors), so I find that the statement rings particularly true with them.

*Obviously Miami would be in HUGE trouble if one of their big three got injured, but they are all much younger and therefore presumably more likely to avoid injuries. Though Dwyane Wade has had his share in the past.

Last night Kevin Garnett went down early with a lower leg injury in the Celtics’ loss at Detroit, the extent of which is unknown as of this writing. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious, but either way it’s a reminder that as dominant as the Celtics can be, the ice they are standing on (metaphorically speaking) is a leeeetle thin.

Speedy recovery, KG. Heat Haters everywhere anxiously await your return.

Shaq, meet Gino

by Micah Hart

Quick aside. When I worked for the Hawks, I traveled with the team during their playoff series against the Celtics in 2008. It was my first trip to the TD Garden, and I was unaware that when the Celtics clinch a victory, they play an American Band clip featuring a dancer wearing a shirt that says Gino. Perhaps you’ve seen it. Seeing as the decimated Hawks were the impetus for Gino’s appearance, I hated him and everything he stood for. However, if it were my team…yeah, I’d probably think it was pretty funny.

So it should come as no surprise that when newly minted Celtic Shaquille O’Neal was first introduced to Gino, his reaction was somewhat more positive.

Here’s Shaq and Kevin Garnett enjoying it from a different angle:

I find the Gino thing remarkably silly, but every team has its own ridiculous way of celebrating things. I’m a Saints fan, and I’m sure people thought we were crazy when we adopted the Cha-ching! commercial in the early 90′s as our rallying cry (seriously — I owned a tee-shirt commemorating the 1991 NFC West division title that read “Cha-ching, Cha-champs”).

Knowing Shaq, I can’t help but think he’ll have some sort of funny response to Gino before the season is over.
