MUSCLEWATCH 2015 (Summer Edition)

ALL BALL NERVE CENTERMUSCLEWATCH traditionally makes its debut each fall as NBA teams assemble for training camp. But sometimes the muscles just can’t be ignored, as has been the case thus far this summer.

But first! What, you may ask, is MUSCLEWATCH? Basically, it began decades ago when my friend Matt and I noticed our local paper would always report that players had gained 15 pounds of MUSCLE in the offseason. No matter the sport, it was never 12 pounds, never 16, never 9, never 18, but seemed to always be 15 pounds of muscle. So we began keeping an eye on the papers looking for references to the magic 15 pounds of MUSCLE. Eventually, MUSCLEWATCH became about more than just the 15 pounds of muscle and more about guys who had either gained or lost a lot of weight. Previous winners include Thad Young and Rudy Gay.

Anyway, with Summer Leagues happening around the NBA the last few weeks, I’ve been getting MUSCLEWATCH reports on Twitter, and I felt that today would be a good day to round them up for posterity.

Let’s actually begin a few weeks back, as prospects were preparing for the NBA Draft. Here we see Willie Cauley-Stein, days before being drafted by the Sacramento Kings, sit down for an interview with ESPN’s Henry Abbott. Early on in this interview, Cauley-Stein mentions gaining 20 pounds of MUSCLE since his college season ended, a staggering figure by any account. Ace interviewer that he is, Abbott seizes on this tidbit and tries to get some details from Cauley-Stein about this important MUSCLEWATCH moment…

My favorite moment of the interview? Probably when Abbott asks Cauley-Stein if he knows who I am, and Cauley-Stein responds with an actual shrug…

Celtics forward James Young has also made MUSCLEWATCH news, although he may be employing some fuzzy math. According to initial reports, Young had put on the magic 15 pounds of MUSCLE…

That’s when the controversy starts. One report says Young apparently gained 20 pounds over the last year, with a 10-pound burst of weight coming more recently?

Or maybe it’s 15 pounds plus 5 more?

Either way, Young is clearly aiming to make a MUSCLEWATCH name for himself heading into the season.

An early MUSCLEWATCH championship candidate is clearly Oklahoma City’s Mitch McGary, who has reportedly shed 30 pounds…

According to McGary, the weight loss is a result of several factors…

McGary credits the weight loss to cooking classes, a healthier diet and rigorous workouts. By eating better and transforming his body, McGary believes he’ll put himself in a better position to stay healthy and play the best basketball of his life.

“I’m sick of being injured and not being able to play at full strength 100 percent,” McGary said. “So this summer was really key for me. I stayed in Oklahoma City and just been working my tail off to get into shape.”

“You were always eating at your parents’ house, and then you go and start living on the pizza and wings diet in college, man,” McGary said. “It’s not cool not knowing how to cook for yourself when you go home and you’re trying to eat out every night. I’d rather just stay home, cook myself up some chicken, some fish, and have a nice dinner at home.”

After only a few months trying his hand at cooking, McGary now proudly shares his creations with fans on social media and jokingly boasts of being a beast in the kitchen.

“Man, I’m nice,” McGary said. “They call me ‘Chef.’”

I think a Mitch McGary cooking show is something the world needs. Congratulations to Chef McGary!

The Timberwolves may be a young team still building, but forward Shabazz Muhammad is trying to grab a MUSCLEWATCH crown right now. According to the T-Wolves, Muhammad is reuniting with a legendary MUSCLEWATCH figure…

We first met “Crazy Frank” last season, back when he was referred to as “Hell’s Trainer.” Muhammad says he’s planning to lose more weight, which seems like a foregone conclusion.

Thaddeus Young invents new form of rookie hazing for Andrew Wiggins

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — We’ve officially reached that time in the season when the players are ready for a vacation and can’t wait for the All-Star break. So how do they deal with that ennui? For some veterans, it seems like this is when they start picking on the rookies, from Philadelphia all the way to Los Angeles.

But it’s not just on the coasts. Check out this video from the last night’s postgame interview session in Minnesota, where the T-Wolves beat the Celtics 110-98. When it was Andrew Wiggins‘ time to talk, veteran forward Thaddeus Young couldn’t let him go unscathed…

Minnesota Timberwolves 90210

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — A year ago we saw a Minnesota Timberwolves video made a group of Spanish T-Wolves fans that mixed together the theme from “Cheers” with shots of the Wolves. This season, to celebrate the new start in Minnesota, the same fans have re-cut the opening credits of the seminal ’90s series “Beverly Hills 90210″ using members of the Timberwolves. It’s brilliantly done, although I have to admit I was hoping for Flip Saunders to pop up in the Joe E. Tata slot at the end of the credits.

MUSCLEWATCH 2014 (Update 1)

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — And here we are again. Summer has officially given way to fall, which means many things, but really only means one thing that we care about around these parts: IT’S ALMOST TIME FOR A NEW NBA SEASON.

And when training camps convene around the country, that means it’s time for … wait for it … MUSCLEWATCH!

What, you may ask, is MUSCLEWATCH? It stems from my friend Matt and I noticing years ago that our local paper used to always say that players had gained 15 pounds of MUSCLE in the offseason. No matter the sport, it was never 12, never 16, never 9, never 18, always 15 pounds of MUSCLE. So we began keeping an eye on the papers looking for references to the magic 15 pounds of MUSCLE. I started chronicling this each season in my blog over at SLAM, and eventually MUSCLEWATCH became about more than just the 15 pounds of muscle and more about guys who had either gained or lost a lot of weight. Previous winners include Thaddeus Young and Rudy Gay.

WHEN WE LAST LEFT MUSCLEWATCH, Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday were putting in work. Let’s get into the muscles…

• The biggest story in the NBA this summer was LeBron James leaving the Miami Heat to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. But pretty soon after the dust settled from The Announcement, LeBron started posting photos online where he looked drastically thinner than he looked last season.

In an interview this week with CNN’s Rachel Nichols, LeBron talked about his weight loss. (Around the 2:45 mark here.) According to LeBron he’s around 250 pounds — even though he’s been listed at 249 for years — thanks to eating only fish, meat, fruits and vegetables for 67 days. He also said, “I had the Cookie Monster chasing me in my dreams a few times.

We don’t know exactly how much weight LeBron lost or even how much he weighed before, unless someone gets it out of him at Cleveland’s media day, which I’m afraid makes him ineligible to win the MUSCLEWATCH title this season.

Instead, LeBron, in recognition of your efforts, we will give you this GIF of Cookie Monster dancing …

• While we’re talking about the NBA’s bold names, how about Carmelo Anthony slimming down?

Last season Melo was listed at 240, but he has apparently been making better choices when eating, according to this article. No Cookie Monster nightmares that we know about yet, however. YET.

The Timberwolves go to the State Fair

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — It’s been a big week for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who officially completed the Kevin Love trade and have effectively re-made their roster, adding a few new players. To celebrate the new additions, the Wolves had Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Thaddeus Young and Zach LaVine in Minnesota to meet the fans at a big rally downtown.

And then? The guys went to the Minnesota State Fair, because why not? The State Fair apparently has a lot of fun stuff to do, particularly if you’re a member of the T-Wolves.

What to do at the State Fair? Well, you pose with your head behind the board at the cheese on a stick sign…

You eat some donuts and rate them as “fire”…

You throw water balloons into a bucket on a dude’s head…

You go head-first down a gigantic slide…

You eat a corn dog…

Bennett definitely enjoyed himself…

After all that? You take your prizes and go home…

Timberwolves offer fans excuse to skip work

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — With the trades finally complete to bring Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and Thaddeus Young to Minnesota, the Timberwolves will welcome their newest additions (along with first round pick Zach LaVine) to town this afternoon with a rally in downtown Minneapolis. The one issue here is that this could be problematic with people who have, you know, jobs, where they’re required to be in an office during this rally. So how to make sure people are able to make it? Offer them an excuse! Today on Timberwolves.com, the Wolves posted a note from Coach/GM Flip Saunders to people’s bosses, asking for some time off (and even making an Office Space reference).

Now if you guys will excuse me I’ve gotta go print this out…

The Return Of MUSCLEWATCH

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — With summer winding down and players getting ready to report to training camp, I thought it was time that we went ahead and starting getting ready for…wait for it…MUSCLEWATCH(TM)!

What, you may be asking, is MuscleWatch? It stems from my friend Matt and I noticing years ago that out local paper used to always say that players had gained 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason. No matter the sport, it was never 12, never 16, never 9, never 18, always 15 pounds of muscle. So we began keeping an eye on the papers looking for references to the magic 15 pounds of muscle. I started chronicling this each season in my blog over at SLAM, and eventually MuscleWatch became about more than just the 15 pounds of muscle and more about guys who had either gained or lost a lot of weight. Last year’s winner was Thaddeus Young, who managed to add 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. (A close runner-up was Enes Kanter, who lost 51(!) pounds.)

Which is where you come in. My eyes and ears are trained to be on guard for MuscleWatch developments, but I can’t be everywhere all the time. Thaddeus Young jumps out of his shoes

Watch Thaddeus Young jump out of his shoe against the Heat on Saturday:

Ok, so he didn’t jump out of his shoe so much as Joel Anthony stepped on it and kept it floorbound while Young went airborn, but you get the picture.

At the end of the video, you’ll see Young toss the shoe towards the Sixers bench, but miss it by thiiiiiiiis much (in particular, I love the reaction of the fan behind the bench – “Hey, I’m sittin’ he-ah!”).

Yesterday at practice Young stopped to discuss the situation with Sixers.com cameras:

Funny stuff. This video re-emphasizes something I learned from my time working for an NBA organization, and that’s that players will never miss an opportunity to mess with the basketball support staff.

Team synopsis: Seems like a lot of these teams are heavy on the big men and short on guards, and it’s not really any different with the Gators. However, despite their size, there’s actually some perimeter firepower here with Bonner, Miller, and even Horford, who has one of the most consistent mid-range jumpers in the NBA (and has started hoisting a three-pointer here and there). Between Lee, Horford, and Noah, it’s hard to imagine many rebounds getting away.
