Robin Lopez continues fight with The Raptor

By Jeff Case

For a few seasons running now, New York Knicks center Robin Lopez has been unabashed in his hatred of mascots, yes. But in particular, he’s had a special, dark place in his heart for the Toronto Raptors’ mascot, The Raptor.

The struggle as we’ve documented around these parts goes back at least 2 years. Last night, the Raptor went to an old trick — a piece of poster board with a list on it — and Lopez took the bait. It also ended a lot like that last poster board-fueled incident, too …

Robin Lopez takes mascot hating international

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — We’ve spent a lot of time chronicling Portland center Robin Lopez and his reign of violence against mascots. This weekend that battle went north of the border, as the Blazers took on the Toronto Raptors. During the game, the Raptors mascot strayed a little too close to a Portland huddle — and for some reason, Atlanta mascot Harry the Hawk was there, as well — and Robin Lopez decided it was time to strike. Sure, the Raptor may have been wearing a Lopez wig, but is that really cause for violence?

And as the cold-hearted Lopez noted via Twitter, “Two with one stone.”

The return of The Raptor

By Lang Whitaker,

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — One of the most crucial NBA injuries to occur during the preseason happened to the Raptor, mascot for the Toronto Raptors, who suffered an Achilles injury. As we noted at the time, everyone in the organization took the news hard.

We last saw the Raptor a few months ago on the road to a return as he attacked rehab. But yesterday, the Raptor finally made his big return. As you can see in the video below, his rehab took him to the ends of the earth, but he managed to get it together in time to rejoin the Raptors for the stretch run.

Toronto Raptor Attacks Rehab

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — It’s been an up and down season thus far for the Toronto Raptors. After a slow start, they traded Rudy Gay, and of late have been playing pretty well, winning four of their last seven.

Of course, the entire season began on an ominous note when their beloved mascot, the Raptor, blew out his Achilles during an exhibition game. The good news, however, as we can see in the video below, is that the Raptor is back up and is attacking his rehab with the same zeal he uses to spray people with silly string. (New idea: Instead of “Celebrity Rehab,” how about “Mascot Rehab”?)

Toronto Raptors Mascot Out For The Season

New Jersey Nets v Toronto Raptors

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER — This is supposed to be the dawn of a new era in Toronto, where the Raptors have a new executive running things (Tim Leiweke), a new general manager (Masai Ujiri), and a new “global ambassador” in place (Drake). This new brain trust is going to try and turn things around, to help the Raptors organization improve from their recent struggles. But alas, one key member of the Raptors organization will apparently have to sit this season out.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the Raptors mascot, known simply as The Raptor, is out for the season after suffering a torn achilles tendon during a Raptors training camp appearance in Halifax. The organization confirmed the bad news via Twitter…

“I called him, I talked to him Friday night,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said during his postgame remarks last night. “I was disappointed. My daughter cried, you know, she was upset. He’s a good man. He’ll bounce back. He’s in good hands with the physicians. The Raptor will be back, he will be back. We need his spirit.
