‘Sven’ Degrees Of Separation From Hanks

By Jeff Case

Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks is known around the world for his range in movies as well as that distinct Tom Hanks yelling that most people seem to love (we always liked the “make you a margarita!” rant from “Turner & Hooch”). Would you believe Mr. Hanks also has a bit of a far-fetched connection with the Denver Nuggets now, too?

Nuggets TV play-by-play man Chris Marlowe, in a former life, was a renown beach volleyball player during his collegiate days at San Diego State University. While out in California, he tried his hand at acting, appearing in low-budget movies such as “Rollerball”, “Rounders”, “The 6th Man” and more while also appearing in TV shows such as the “Love Boat”, “A Man Called Sloane” and “Bosom Buddies.”

If that last acting appearance does (or doesn’t) ring a bell, it was the show on which Hanks got his first break in a leading role. The show aired from 1980-82 and had 37 episodes before being cancelled. How does this all tie into Marlowe? He appeared in an episode as a masseuse named “Sven” and shared a little screen time with Hanks.

Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post shares the details:

The footage has been uncovered! Marlowe, as you may know, was an actor back in the early 80s, when he nabbed a role on the sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” starring Peter Scolari (and also Tom Hanks). Marlowe played Sven, the Swedish masseuse, who had a classic line: “I would like you to relax your tushy.”

Marlowe tells a fun story. One time, he ran into Hanks at a restaurant in L.A. He approached the Oscar winner and was like, “Tom, this is going to sounds silly, but actually, I was on an episode of ‘Bosom Buddies.’ ” And Hanks scrupulously looked him up and down and then said: “Sven!”

And in case you’re wondering, here’s a more recent photo of Marlowe:

Live from New York, it’s Carmelo Anthony!

by Micah Hart

Carmelo Anthony hasn’t been in New York that long, but as the city’s shiniest new superstar you knew it was only a matter of time before he made his way onto the set of the Big Apple’s favorite show, Saturday Night Live.

With Elton John hosting last night, ‘Melo joined Tom Hanks in making a cameo on the recurring digital short Laser Cats. Roll it!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Anthony also appeared in an amusing sketch for an ESPN Classic showing of ladies’ shot put, but be warned there is some slightly adult-themed content.

What do you think? Did Carmelo show enough to get a chance as a host someday?
