Labor Day heroics and 20,000 shots

by Zettler Clay

Sometimes we look at the news and see events happen with an air of helplessness. Then there are times when you shoot jumpers until your arms fall off to raise money for the family of slain troops. Which is exactly what 12-year-old Will Thomas did.

He decided to ask people to pledge a small amount… a penny or two… hoping to bring in at least $1,000 for each family of one of the 17 Navy Seals killed in the August 6th helicopter attack and crash in Afghanistan.

“It was the hardest day for the Seals, the worst loss in Navy Seal history,” said Will.

Besides the nobility of the cause, kudos to Will for the commitment to arching thousands of parabolas to the tune of over 20,000 converts in three days. Because of his efforts, more than $34,000 was raised.

There are certainly worse ways to spend your Labor Day.

UPDATE: We heard from Will’s parents, who added that donations to can still be made if you are interested in supporting the cause. Go to the Navy SEAL Foundation’s website and choose Operation Hawkeye on the dropdown menu if you care to contribute.
